As founder of StartBuild, LLC, Rob leads a team that produces detailed, line-item cost-to-build reports for new home construction across all 50 U.S. states and every Canadian province.

Rob brings more than 30 years of hands-on experience in residential construction to the work, across a range of roles in the industry. That background shapes everything about how StartBuild builds its reports: they are designed to reflect how homes really get priced and built, not how a calculator assumes they do.

What StartBuild does

Customers can take virtually any home plan they find online — or upload their own architect or builder PDF set — and receive a complete, personalized cost-to-build report. The technology lets them adjust the variables that genuinely move a budget: foundation type, roofing, siding, doors and windows, material quality tiers (Good, Better, Best, and Custom), site work, utilities, infrastructure, and soft costs. The result is a full project total tailored to a specific plan and build location, not a vague per-square-foot guess.

Over more than 20 years, that approach has produced more than 90,000 individual reports for over 40,000 customers — many of whom order several reports to compare different plans, material packages, or foundation options side by side. Today the team delivers thousands of reports each month, for projects spanning zip codes in all 50 states and across Canada.

Technology with a human in the loop

What sets StartBuild apart is a deliberate refusal to fully automate. Every single report is personally reviewed by a StartBuild team member before it goes out — reports are never generated and shipped without human oversight. Most reports are ready within hours, with delivery guaranteed within two business days.

That human review is where real construction experience earns its keep. If a customer selects a lower "Good" material grade for a large or architecturally complex custom home, for example, the team will thoughtfully adjust the estimate to a more realistic "Better" or "Custom" level — and include clear notes explaining why. The goal is always accuracy and usefulness, not simply processing whatever inputs were entered. After delivery, customers stay fully in control: they can adjust any line item themselves to match their builder’s real pricing, their own preferences, or local conditions.

A customer-first philosophy

That philosophy shows up in the numbers that matter most. StartBuild’s refund request rate sits at roughly one in a thousand, and the company gladly issues a full refund to anyone who doesn’t find clear value in their report. A built-in Help & Feedback system lets customers ask specific questions about their report or plan and get personal answers back, and Rob’s team is always glad to speak directly with homeowners and builders to talk through budgets and support the planning process.

StartBuild also specializes in custom reports for modified or one-of-a-kind plans, and regularly prepares estimates for plans from house plan websites well beyond its formal partners.
